The British Airways Speedbird Self-Sponsored Pathway is an innovative approach to pilot recruitment in providing applicants with a structured and secure route to become First Officers. This new scheme, a rebrand from the Newly Qualified Pilot Pathway, wants to bring some assurance into aviation careers by promising a conditional offer of employment prior to commencing training. It has been designed for individuals from the ATOs who have already completed their training up to the Instrument Rating (IR) and are about to complete their Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC) course within six months.

 

Key Features:

Target Audience: Candidates currently in training with up to an IR, planning to complete their APS MCC course within six months.

Entry Criteria:

  • Physical Requirements: Height between 1.57m (5'2") and 1.91m (6'3"); those taller than 1.91m must undergo a functionality check.
  • Medical and Fitness: Must meet BA medical requirements and hold a UK Class 1 flight crew medical certificate.
  • Language Proficiency: ICAO ELP Level 6.
  • Legal and Regulatory: A valid passport for worldwide travel, the right to live and study in the UK, a UK Part-FCL license, and tattoos that are not visible in uniform.

 

Training Criteria:

  • Academic Performance: Average score of 85%+ in ATPL Ground School with no more than three resits.
  • Practical Performance: First series pass in CPL and ME/IR with APS MCC completion and UPRT, holding a UK Part-FCL license.

 

Selection Process:

  • Online application
  • Pre-recorded video interview
  • Assessment day comprising tests, group exercises, and interviews
